Plantscape encourages stay-at-homers to create their own In Bloom displays

In Bloom enthusiasts may not be able to get together at the moment because of stay-at-home and social distancing measures, but there is nothing to stop them making their immediate neighbourhoods colourful, believes Plantscape.

As part of our campaign to help everyone find interesting ways to enjoy their own space while staying at home, we thought we’d encourage green-fingered folk to create their own mini In Bloom gardens.

Sales executive Alan McGregor, who works with councils and BID groups across southern and central England and Wales, suggests planting up containers in front gardens, balconies and on windowsills to bring joy to those living across the road.

“Being at home is an ideal time to really appreciate where we live and what we can do in our own homes. Flowers and nature bring joy and the pleasure, and planting something from seed and watching it grow is immensely rewarding,” he said.

“Maybe they could add a competition element – like who can grow the longest trailing plant from a hanging basket.”

Blooms used in Plantscape’s own summer baskets include trailing surfinia, cascading begonia, ivy leaf geraniums, bushy fuschia and verbena which provide nectar rich purple flowers.

He also suggests people can grow displays in their back gardens, if they have them, and posts pictures on Plantscape’s Facebook page to share with a wider audience.

And they can even recreate a community garden feeling by arranging virtual gardening parties in real-time via Zoom, Skype or Teams.

“Oddly, social distancing seems to be generating greater social and community cohesion. Although we are physically distanced from friends and families, in some ways we are more connected than ever before. Skype, Zoom and the like are coming into their own,” said Alan.

Plantscape has worked with many In Bloom winners over the years – both by supplying its own dazzling displays and providing them with DIY planters complete with a unique seven day watering system so they can create their own.
