Town bosses say flowers are part of the recovery process, as Plantscape team pulls out all the stops

It’s all hands on deck at the Plantscape greenhouse complex in Derbyshire – with the first baskets and planters scheduled to hit Britain’s town centres just after the late May bank holiday.

Tens of thousands of plants, all lovingly nestled in barrier and hanging baskets, enormous flower towers and lamp post mounted planters, are being watered daily by the team of just three very busy members of staff – all of whom can easily socially distance thanks to the vastness of the glass houses.

Some of the first towns due to enjoy a dazzling injection of colour towards the end of the month include Clifton and Sandy in Bedfordshire, Berinsfield in Oxfordshire, Retford in Nottinghamshire and Leeds.

Numerous councils across England and Wales are looking forward to the positive impact flowers will have on the emotional wellbeing of their residents – none more so, it would seem than horticultural development officer Rosie Biggs at North West Leicestershire District Council. who says townsfolk need flowers to help them cope with the trying times in which we all find ourselves.

Coalville will be filled with 70 hanging and barrier baskets and nearly three dozen dramatic flower towers.

“Floral displays are a great way to enhance the town landscape for both residents and visitors,” she said.

“The visual impact of flowers can lift the mood and have a positive impact on people’s health and wellbeing. Spending time outdoors in a greener environment can reduce stress levels and anxiety. We hope that by installing flower towers and flower beds within the town it is part of the recovery process, as we work together in supporting our community in these difficult times.”
